    Re: Coeburn Changes

It is not uncommon for kids to play both ways. When I played for Kelly in the early 80's there was at least 6 of us that NEVER came off the field and we loved it. Most kids would love to get the chance to play the whole game. You have to be in shape and you have to love playing the sport. (There is a lot of love in the above post!) LOL

I also agree with the other folks when I say let the coaches do their job. The best way to bring down a program is for the parents to get on forums like this and undermine the coaches. The kids will feed into this and lose their will to play. We had a problem at Kelly a few years back when parents would sit in the stands and bad mouth every decision our coaches made. Even if I disagree with B.I., I keep it to myself. He is the coach. If you want to build a long term program, you have to respect that. The only reason I would ever step in would be out of concern for my son's safety. (I.E. concussion, injury ect.) Being tired is not one of them. I just tell him to "man up" and go do some more conditioning work.

As far as Coeburn's coaches are concerned I want to say that I believe they are doing an excellent job. When Kelly played Coeburn last week, those boys were ready to play. They played their hearts out for 4 quarters and they never gave up. Your coach knows what he's doing if you will give him a chance.

well said oldte86. that's one of the problems that every small town has when they get a new coach. they never want to give them the time to win and turn the program around. everyone thinks if you dont win right now your not a good coach. it take a few years to turn a program around.

I'm saying they need to jump ship. Send them to all to J.I. Burton, Especially the Wrestler we got the Deans.

I feel your pain, I heard most of the summer Coeburn was going to be better this year.. IMO what the coach may be trying to do since they have been losing is MOVE guys around so they maybe find players in other positions? If you aren't winning you gotta try something.

As far as starting a kid when he said he wouldn't if they didn't go to Two-a Days, you will never get kids in the Weight room or two-a days if you don't lay down rules and stick by them.

    Re: Coeburn Changes

to kind of use a Hank Jr phrase, if you have 50 kids out for football and you run off 20 kids that are not committed, then you end up with 30 totaly committed kids to build with.
Hank would say when he statred out he would go do a show and if there was 10,000 there and 7,000 walked out because he wasn't his daddy, he just made 3,000 Hank Jr. fans, then it builds from there.
look, coaching change is always going to have growing pains. players that started before might not start now. they may not fit what the team is doing. may not have the attitude. may not have tried because they were starters before. I DON'T KNOW what the situation is. all I know is that when I played for JIB in the mid to late 80's, I played my 4 years and we won a total of 11 games. no playoffs. no winning seasons. We had a core group there and stuck it out. just a couple years after I graduated JIB was playing for a State Championship. I like to think that maybe, just maybe our core group had a small hand in this because of the example we set in the weight room and on the practice field. of course they had a different coach too. give it time before we start roasting the coaching in Coeburn, maybe they have a long term plan and Rome wasn't built in a day.

    Re: Coeburn Changes

I agree about Coeburn slowly becoming another Pound..too much parent interference and not enough dedication by the players to commit to the coaches and team and stop listening to mommie and daddy when it comes to football. Coaches decide who should play in practices. Younger and not experienced kids are going to be the dummy team. That is how kids gain experience. That is the way it is in football. Every football team that has the players to do it, has a dummy team. They run the other oppositions plays. That is their contribution, that is part of a team. That is football!
Even in Clintwood, parents complain about lack of playing team for their 115 lb child who is a freshman. I like what coaches over here tell parents. G.Y.O.T.!!!

    Re: Coeburn Changes

This is a classic case of "I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but here's how you need to do it."

I know, from experience, that sometimes you need to feel the kids out. Some kids are practice players. They will whip anybody in practice, knock people down and kick butt. But you put them in the game and they fall in a fetal position and suck their thumb first chance they get. You try to coach the kid up, he needs confidence, experience. He keeps doing it. Get him out of there!

Then there are the gamers. These kids get their butts whipped everypractice, but they keep coming. Everytime they are in the game they make a play. You think it may be a fluke. Then you start them and they play great.

My point is this: Tony Dungy couldn't change what's been going on in Coeburn the last few years in 6 weeks and neither can Matt Hamilton.

It takes time to learn the players. Your schedule hasn't been easy either. You need to stand behind the coach and quit trying to figure out things that don't make sense to you, especially when you don't want them to.

You got that right. 0-10 under B.I.,and folks were calling for the man's head (although he had been a winner his whole life). Rome wasn't built in a day,and it takes some time to get system in place, and get the kind of kids you want playing. Give Matt some time, and he'll make a force to be reckoned with at Coeburn.
